History

Back in 1933, the dream of Mario Veiga de Almeida starts the history of UVA.

Aged 16, along with his sister, Maria Anunciação de Almeida, Mario Veiga de Almeida, founder of the Veiga de Almeida University, starts reading and writing classes for children who, with reading difficulties, were unable to keep up with the scripture classes at the Holy Christ church, where he did voluntary work. As a classroom they used the dining table of the modest house where they lived, adopted by their godparents, having lost their parents while still children.

In 1937, the improvised school room changes its address, to a house with a few classrooms, and thus the first school is born; the Sacred Heart of Jesus School.

In 1945 another move, this time to the Heart of Jesus Institute, and then in the 1950's, to the Veiga de Almeida High School, by this time with some 3,000 pupils.

Higher education began in 1971, with the creation of the Veiga de Almeida Engineering School, giving programs in Civil and Electrical Engineering. In 1992 the creation of new programs led to recognition and official accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) for the Veiga de Almeida University, which currently has 3 campuses and a center of excellence for health.
